Pathetic Man sets his wife on fire

 A slight tiff over a father-in-law's burial was enough reason for a middle-aged man named Onya to set his wife ablaze on JB street in Benin City, the Edo State capital, the Punch has reported.

According to the Punch, an argument erupted following Onya's refusal to attend his father-in-law's burial which his wife saw as his bounden duty thus sparking off discontent in their home long after the burial had taken place.

Probably irked by the yells of hate in his heart, reports say, Onya poured petrol on his wife and set her ablaze.

Onya's wife by name Margaret is being treated for burns in an undisclosed hospital in the city.

Margret, Punch further revealed, said her husband had threatened to teach her a lesson who actually carried out his threats in spite of her repeated pleas which she said fell on deaf ears.

While narrating her ordeals she said “We had a quarrel and my husband was telling me he will teach me a lesson. After the quarrel, I sat on the chair and my husband was gazing towards one direction.

Continuing her husband she said  ''later stood up, brought petrol and wanted to pour it on me. I immediately held the container and we were dragging it while I was shouting for help from neighbours.

“Before I knew it, he turned the petrol in a bucket, poured it on me and lit a matchstick. It was my neighbour who rushed into our apartment that put off the fire on me with water.”

The Punch further  reported that efforts made by its Benin City correspondent to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Osifo Abiodun to confirm the incident  were unsuccessful.
