A University of San Francisco pitcher who donated part of his liver to his ailing mother was unable to save her as she died after never fully recovering from the surgery.
Last month, Joey Carney stepped away from his baseball career to donate part of his liver to his mother, Paula Carney, despite his parents' reservations.
He and his mother checked into the UC San Francisco Medical Center where they underwent their respective transplant surgeries, and she received about 40 per cent of his liver on June 2.
But on Thursday his 50-year-old mother, who required the transplant after becoming ill with end-stage liver disease, died, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Initially following the transplant, Paula Carney had appeared to recover quickly in the first few days.
However, she later experienced a number of setbacks, which included internal bleeding and eventually liver failure, the newspaper reported.
'Seems like the only time we communicate our true feelings is when a tragedy happens,' her husband Dale Carney wrote in a text message to loved ones on Thursday, according to the Times.
'For me, today, tell your spouse and kids, close family members, how you feel. They are what we live for.'
Joey Carney had made the decision to undergo the liver transplant after demanding his parents let him get tested to see if he was a match, and told his parents they could no longer try to talk him out of it.
