IJAW Youths have commended the Federal Government for its decision to dialogue with the Ijaw militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers but warn that any calculated attempt to play politics with the proposed dialogue will doubtless extend the evil days.
Attacks on oil and gas facilities have reduced Nigeria's oil production output which has adversely affected the nation's revenue.
This was contained in a statement by the Ijaw Youth Council Western Zone Chairman, Mr. Freedom Atigbi who patted President Buhari on the back for the decision but advised the president to be sincere in its desire.
The statements reads, “Any attempt by government to play politics with this dialogue might only extend the evil days facing the economy, traumatised as a result of government’s inability to face the main issues confronting the region, which has been the case with successive governments, which had opened an opportunity for further agitation in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.”Continuing, Mr. Atigbi appealed to the Niger Delta Avengers, to embrace dialogue and sheath swords as the only true process to end the current hostilities in the oil-rich Niger Delta region has begun with the Olive branch extended to the group by the Federal Government.
“Therefore, the government should take the process seriously because much more damage had already been done to the environment through oil spills by oil companies and militants’ activities.”
“The current hostilities in the region cannot be separated from the age-long neglect on the path of government for not addressing the principal issues such as true federalism,” he added.
