A doomed Nation : Military action won’t end insurgency in Niger Delta – Ijaw group

The
Ijaw National Congress (INC) has said that the use of military will not bring an end to the ongoing insurgency in the Niger Delta region, championed by a new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
This is as the organisation appealed to the federal government to restructure the Presidential Amnesty Programme for better impact on the people and communities in the Niger Delta region.
The INC, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by its president, Barrister Boma Obuoforibo, urged the federal government to embrace dialogue and negotiation with the militants.
Obuoforibo said, “We appeal to the federal government to show restraint in its pronouncement and actions to crush the Niger Delta militants. We believe that this will not bring any lasting solution to this complex problem. The options of dialoguing and negotiating are worthwhile and therefore should be pursued.
“While we urge the perpetrators to immediately stop these unwholesome actions, we appeal to the federal government to restructure the Amnesty Programme for better impact on the people and community to assuage the plight of the people of the region and remove from focus some of the issues that have been responsible for these behaviours.
“We condemn the present resurgence of bombing of pipelines and oil installations in the Niger Delta as this ultimately, is counterproductive to the Niger Delta and the Nigerian nation.”
The INC President also appeals to the Federal Government to urgently enter into dialogue with stakeholders in the Niger Delta region in a bid to safeguard the interest of the nation.
He pledged the continued support of the Ijaw ethnic nationality to the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, pointing out that as an apolitical organization, the INC will support popularly elected government
